Crochet Potholder pattern.

Isn't this an adorable little thing?

Simple,  useful and not trying to do, or be more than it is.

Working double strand Cotton yarn together,  with the principles of the Relationship stitch, the creation is perfect for daily use in your kitchen,  or as a gift.

First,  we start with  yarn.
I chose some recycled cotton. It was a lapghan that had multiple colors,  and interesting attempts at keeping the edges straight. It was sad, and deserved better. Rather than tossing it in the give away basket,  I decided to frog the whole thing, and bring the yarn to design anew.
My sample weighs 2.3 ounces. Based on label information on Lily Sugar N Cream (what I believe the yarn to be) one potholder can be made from 1  2.5oz ball. But generally these are done in pairs, and since the design requires 2 strands, go ahead and get 2.
One color, or two?

That is entirely up to you.  Play with color. Life is for learning and should be fun.
I used a 6.0 mm Crochet Hook.


Ch 24, insert hook in the second ch from the hook,  draw up a loop,  insert hook in the next ch, draw up a loop,  3 loops on your hook,  

  yarn over, and draw through all three loops,

ch1. The ch sp is vital to the success of this pattern.  

*insert hook in the next loop,  draw up a loop,  twice,  3 loops on hook,  yarn over and pull through all three,  ch1.  Repeat from *to the last ch,

Row two, and each there after

 Ch 1, turn

see the single thread that separates the sc from the ch 1 sp?
that is where each leg of the stitch will go.

 insert hook in the first st, draw up a loop, insert in the ch sp, draw up a loop, yarn over, Draw through all three loops, ch 1 

this is how the completed st looks from the other side

 Continue working until you have about 8 inches in height. for me, that was 20 rows.

At this point, Cut the working yarn, and weave in ends. You have a functional potholder, or trivet to use on your dining table.

If you wish to add the hanging loop, and border, Only cut one of the strands, and weave in that end. Then

using your same hook, ch 6, sl st back to the edge of the sc just worked. * ch 1, sl st on the side of the next row. Repeat from the * to the corner, and then ch 1, sk 1 st, sl st to the next, to the next corner.  Now repeat from the * to the beginning of the round, placing last sl st at the base of ch 6.

Next round,  work 2 sc, 8hdc, 2sc in ch 6 loop,  *Ch 2, sl st in next ch 1 sp, Repeat from * around. No need to do extra at the corners.
